Playing Second Fiddle

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself..” ~ Philippians 2:3

One way to discover the works of service God wants you to do is to offer to play second fiddle.  “It matters more than tongue can tell/ to play the second fiddle well,” quips the couplet.  Playing second fiddle, particularly when you have first-fiddle gifts, is a marvelous way to start serving others.  There are so many second-fiddle positions to fill.  Very few people want them, as most people are heading for the top and working at being visible.  If we would only roll up our sleeves and “have a go,” as we say in England.  If we would but get involved wherever there is a need, then God could maneuver us into the right niche.

You can’t guide a stationary car, you know – just as God can’t guide a stationary Christian.  We need to start going somewhere, doing something, soon!  You may complain, “But it isn’t my thing to teach Sunday school, help with the food collection, mow lawns, pick up old folks, count money, wash dishes, give my testimony.”  Maybe not, but have you ever considered it might be His thing for you?  The Lord taught me years ago that if I would stop worrying about playing first fiddle, and would start with second and do it well and to the glory of God, I would stumble over those prepared works along the way!

Have you taken your place in God’s orchestra yet?  What are you waiting for?  Why not start by playing second fiddle?

Lord, thank You for the talents You have given me, and for the huge variety of opportunities to serve You and work in Your kingdom.  I know that You have a place for me in Your orchestra.  Give me the courage to step out into Your service, and the energy to do whatever I find to Your glory.  Amen.
