Your Relationships

We were made to be in relationship. “It is not good for the man to be alone,” God said after creating Adam (Gen. 2:18). This is not just an affirmation of marriage; God made us to be in relationship with Him and in community with others. Even the Trinity itself — God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit — reflects God’s design for community.

Our identity is often defined by our relationships. We may be a wife, mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and cousin. We also have relationships with neighbors, co-workers, friends, and people we do ministry with. We may even have online relationships through social media.

Unfortunately, because we are all human, and therefore sinful, where there are relationships, there will be conflict.

We often relate to people based on our past relationships. We show love the way we were shown love. We may parent our children the way we were parented, or we may make a conscious effort to parent the way we wish we had been parented. We enter relationships with preconceived expectations that are influenced by our previous experiences. These experiences create patterns that may be repeated over and over again in different relationships. Some patterns are healthy, while others may be unhealthy.

And, the Bible has a lot to say about relationships. Romans 12 states, “Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. … When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! … Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone” (Rom. 12:1;, 13-16; 18, NLT).

So as we navigate our many relationships, may we nurture each of them in a God-honoring way. And may we remember the importance of love, grace, and mutual respect in building healthy and fulfilling relationships that reflect God's love as well as bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.
