Losing Faith

It’s healthy to ask questions, as long as you know where to go for reliable answers. Just Between Us seeks to provide Bible-based answers to some of the most common questions about the Christian faith. Peruse the articles listed below, or use the search bar to look up other faith-based topics. But ultimately, take your doubts to Jesus, “who initiates and perfects our faith” (Heb. 12:2, NLT), and He will strengthen you.

Questioning Your Faith

I think my favorite disciple was Thomas.

He was nicknamed "Doubting Thomas" because, when the other disciples told him they had seen the resurrected Jesus, he refused to believe them “unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side” (John 20:25).

He had doubts, but he was not afraid to express his feelings.

Before Jesus’ death, at His last Passover, He tried to comfort His disciples, knowing they were about to experience a real crisis of faith. “I will come back and take you to be with me,” He assured them. “…You know the way to the place where I am going” (John 14:3-4). I’m sure all the disciples were wondering what He meant, but only Thomas spoke up: “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Both of these times, Jesus responded with gentleness. At the Last Supper, He reminded Thomas that He, Jesus, is the “way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6) and anyone who knows Jesus knows God the Father, as well. After His resurrection, when Jesus appeared to Thomas, He invited him to touch His scars, adding gently, “Stop doubting and believe.”

Jesus treats us the same way. He doesn’t mind our questions. He can handle our doubts.

But just like Peter, when walking on the water, began to sink when He focused on the storm surrounding him, we need to keep our focus on the One who calms the storms. When Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus was there to catch him (Matt. 14:29-32). Jesus is there for us, too, even in a storm of doubts.

Questioning your faith is not a sign of weakness. Sometimes the people who are most honest about their doubts are the ones with the greatest faith. Think of Thomas, for instance. When Jesus declared that He was going to Judea — where He knew the Jewish leaders wanted to kill Him — in order to raise Lazarus from the dead, Thomas was ready to follow Jesus to his death, declaring with conviction, “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (John 11:16). And after seeing the risen Jesus for himself, Thomas proclaimed, “my Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)— one of the strongest professions of the deity of Christ in the New Testament.

When you find yourself lost in doubt and losing faith, go to Jesus. Tell Him how you’re feeling. Search His Word, and remind yourself who He is.
