How do we live out our faith every day? By living it out, not in. Faith is not meant to be hoarded, it’s meant to be shared. Living out our faith means choosing to focus it outwardly, through serving, sharing Christ, offering hospitality, showing compassion, comforting one another, and living and growing in community.

We are all sent out to proclaim the kingdom of God (Luke 9:60), but that can look different for everyone. For some it means leaving their home and traveling to a faraway country to share Christ with those who look and speak much differently than they do. For someone else, it may mean inviting a homeless person to live with them or volunteering at a crisis pregnancy center or sharing Christ with their neighbor.

Jesus said to pray, “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). He also said, “The kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21b KJV). Like in the parable Jesus told of the servants whose master gave them three months’ wages and asked them to invest it for a profit (Luke 19:11-26), we are called to use the gifts God has planted within us to spread His kingdom on earth.

In other words, we are to be “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world” (Matt. 5:13-16). Salt gives flavor and preserves meat so it doesn’t spoil but provides nourishment to those who eat it. Light reveals that which is hidden and shows the path forward to those living in darkness. Without light, we would all be stumbling in the dark, not knowing which way to go.

God calls us to “encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Heb. 3:13). So how will you live out your faith in the everyday? Will you provide nourishment to a hungry soul? Will you light the way for someone who is lost in a dark world? Will you add flavor to the life of someone who only knows a mundane existence?

We at Just Between Us (JBU) want to encourage you to “seek first his kingdom” (Matt. 6:33) by living out your faith and being salt and light to an aching world.
