Have you ever questioned God’s faithfulness? You may at times have found yourself wondering:

Is God still faithful … when someone I love dies too soon? … when my spouse says he doesn’t want to be married to me anymore? … when my kids tell me they’ve decided not to follow Jesus? … when the ministry I invested years of my life in is taken from me? … when my health is suddenly in jeopardy, or the future I thought was all planned out is put on hold?

You’re not alone. Many people have asked such questions when bad things happen. But if we have a relationship with God, it’s at those times, when the night seems darkest, that His faithfulness shines through. As the psalmist wrote, “If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you” (Ps. 139:11-12).

To understand God’s faithfulness, let’s look at His character:

He is a loving God (Deut. 7:9). He has kept His “covenant of love” with His people for a thousand generations. Likewise, He loves you and “will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deut. 31:8).

He is unchanging (Num. 23:19). God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb. 13:8). That means you can rely on Him to be true to His character and consistent in how He responds to those who reach out to Him (Acts 17:27).

He keeps His promises (Heb. 10:23). Just as God kept all His promises to the Israelites (Josh. 21:45), He will keep His promises to you. If He says it, He will do it (1 Thess. 5:24).

If you are questioning whether God still sees you and hears the cries of your soul—if the night seems dark and dawn seems far away—remember these words:

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lam. 3:21-23).

Whenever my faith grows weary, I echo the words of the man who asked Jesus if He could heal his son, who was tormented by an evil spirit. When Jesus told him that anything is possible for someone who believes, the desperate father cried, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.” And Jesus healed the boy (Mark 9:17-27). If you find yourself asking whether God is faithful, cry out to Him. He will meet you even in your doubt.
