Hot Topics in Ministry

By Cherry Hoffner

Politics. Gender. Sexuality. Immigration. Race. Technology. Are these words causing your blood pressure to spike? The world is bombarding the church day after day with some new controversy or question. How do we deal with these hot topics in ministry in ways that are faithful to the God we serve?

Go to God

Our first order of business when we’re faced with a sticky situation should be to go to the Lord in prayer and to study His Word. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5 NIV) As ministry leaders, we are God’s children first and leaders second. We can seek wisdom from the world and from fellow Christians, but we should “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” (Mt. 6:33, emphasis added)

Do your research

There are many topics that God’s Word does not directly address. We can still apply its principles, but it’s often helpful to consult other Christians and experts on a topic. How many of us are experts on issues of immigration or sexuality or technology? When a new topic crops up, it’s helpful to educate yourself before you sign hastily drafted statements or speak too quickly. Take the time to do some research so that you can respond thoughtfully and prayerfully.

There are at least two sides to every issue. In fact, most issues are multifaceted. Take the time to listen to all sides. Listen to more than one media outlet; especially those you know you disagree with. Talk to people on the other side; find out why they believe what they believe. Listening doesn’t imply agreement, but you may gain valuable insights about the situation you didn’t have before. You might even change your mind…and that might not be a bad thing.

Identify your idols

Many topics reveal deeply embedded idols in our hearts. Do you value your political party over your relationship with God? Do you spend more time on social media than in your Bible? Are you quick to dismiss racism when you’ve never had a relationship with anyone of a different race or culture? Ask the Lord to show you what your idols are. And be willing to tear them down…before they tear you down.

God will help you navigate these tricky waters as long as you are open to His guidance.

Just Between Us strives to keep you abreast of all the hot topics facing ministry leaders today. Take some time to prayerfully read through these articles. We hope they will equip you to deal with the variety of issues you may be facing.
