Will You Trust Him?

“I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I AM!” (John 8:58, NLT)

If this verse hadn’t been printed in red letters in my Bible, the proofreader in me would have taken a red pen and written “poor grammar” in the margin. But because Jesus is speaking here, I know He said exactly what He meant: He is God eternal.

“I AM” is the name God used for Himself at the burning bush when Moses asked whom he should tell the Israelites had sent him (Ex. 3:13-14). “I AM” is present tense, meaning God is always now. There is no past or future for Him. He is outside of time. Eternity is NOW for Him.

It also means He never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. So while the world around us may be constantly in flux, we have a Solid Rock, an Anchor for our soul (Heb. 6:19) in whom we can place our trust. As Jill Briscoe writes, “It isn’t the amount of trust we have, it’s the object of our trust that matters.”

We also know God has a plan for each of us. The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jer. 29:11).

Despite knowing that intellectually, I don’t always live by it. Sometimes I think I know better and try to live my life by my own plan instead of God’s. But lacking His omniscience, the ability to see the whole picture, I usually mess things up.

That’s when I try to follow Job’s example. At the end of the story of Job, when God finally answers Job’s big question of “why?” with an even bigger answer—“Because I am God and you are not.” — Job responds in humility: “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (Job 42:2-3).

Once we recognize that God is trustworthy, that He has a plan for our lives, and that His plans are better than anything we could ever ask or imagine, we can live by faith, knowing His will for us is “good, pleasing and perfect” (Rom. 12:2).
