The Power of Prayer

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (Jas. 5:16).

Where does the power of prayer come from? It’s not in how we pray or what we say. There is no magic formula that guarantees our prayers will be answered the way we want them to. No, the power of prayer is in the Person we are praying to.

When Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the Temple that separated the people who came to worship from the Holy of Holies—where the high priest would enter once a year to offer a blood sacrifice for the sins of the nation of Israel—was torn in two, from the top down (Matt. 27:51). That was God’s way of saying, “There is no longer a barrier between Me and my people.” He invites us to come boldly before His throne (Heb. 4:16) and ask whatever is on our hearts (John 15:7). The same power that makes us righteous in His sight is the power that makes our prayers effective.

A wise woman in my church once said it’s like we’ve all been given a golden phone. That phone connects us to the King of the Universe. And why are we given that phone? Because He loves us as His own. As His adopted children, we have our Father’s ear, and He wants what’s best for us. That’s why we have permission to ask anything of Him. But just like any wise and loving earthly father, God answers our prayers in the way that will benefit us the most. Sometimes that means He says, “Yes.” Sometimes He says, “No.” Sometimes He says, “Wait.” And sometimes He will answer in a way that is totally unexpected.

Does prayer change God’s mind? Or does prayer change us? That is a mystery. But we know God wants us to pray, just as a loving earthly father would want you to share what’s on your heart, ask him for the things you need, and thank him for the things he’s given you. So “devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving” (Col. 4:2, NASB). And, read what the Bible has to say about prayer and then put into practice what you’ve learned.
