Daily Living in God's Word

God reveals Himself in His Word; we can be confident that it is trustworthy. If you want to know Him better, immerse yourself in Scripture. If you have trouble understanding it, ask Him for guidance. In the words of the psalms: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Ps. 119:18).

Just Between Us has several articles here to help you grow in your ability to daily live by God’s Word.

God's Word

Its Inspiration

The Bible was written over a 1,500-year span by more than 40 authors in three different languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek) and contains different genres of writing—from history to prophecy, poetry to letters. Yet it contains one continuous story, the story of God’s redemptive plan.

The apostle Paul writes, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

The Greek word for “God-breathed,” theopneustos, is a combination of theos (God) and pneó (breathe out). “Just as when one exhales his breath, and that breath comes from his innermost being, so ultimately all Scripture is to be viewed as the very product of God himself,” writes John R. Cross in The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus. In essence, through divine inspiration, the biblical authors transcribed words breathed into them by God’s Spirit (pneuma or “breath”). Another way of describing it is that they “spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21).

Through the years, copies of these original writings were made by scribes who meticulously copied every letter, so accurately that when the Dead Sea Scrolls, written in 100 BC, were compared to manuscripts from 900 AD, there were no significant differences.

Its Power

Knowing the Bible is God-inspired gives us confidence to use it as a guide for living. Going back to that verse in 2 Tim., we see that God’s Word is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” and for equipping His servants “for every good work.”

If we apply what God’s Word teaches, we’ll find it contains power to transform us more and more into His likeness. He can use it to convict us of sin (Heb. 4:12), to guide our path (Ps. 119:105) and to accomplish His purposes for our life (Isa. 55:10-11).

As the psalmist writes:

“The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward” (Ps. 19:7-11).
