Digital Wellness and Social Media

Social Media

By Ronnie Wendt

Social media can be a blessing or a curse. It depends on how you use it. Too often, however, in our scroll-and-click world, social media becomes a place where we boast about our lives; wield opinions like swords; slander politicians, movie stars, and others whose beliefs differ from ours; and unleash our anger and aggression in unhealthy and cruel ways.

Though social media is often a venue where complaints are heard, anger is expressed, and the beliefs of others are mowed down to elevate our own, it can also be a place where we glorify God and represent Him well. Here, we can point people to Jesus and share the impact He has had in our lives with thousands of people in the digital realm.

But we must remember “Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God” (Rom. 8-8). When social media is levied in the wrong ways, it becomes the realm of the flesh, or Satan’s realm. Though social media is man’s creation, we can leverage it for God’s glory, and when it is used this way, it becomes part of the realm of the Spirit, or God’s realm.

Our path to digital wellness starts by making social media part of God’s realm. This happens by becoming “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (Jas. 1:19). By stepping aside from the kind of social media that pollutes our thinking, we can start using social media as a tool to glorify Him, praise Him, share the Word and our testimony, and bring others to Jesus.

We at Just Between Us understand that social media use can drag you down, incite your anger, and push you to lash out. But it can also be a place where you can spread the good news of  Jesus Christ. To help put you on a mission to use social media to glorify God and spread His Word, we have put together a group of articles about the dangers and the blessings of social media. Start yourself on a path to digital wellness in social media and your faith today by reading a few of the articles we have compiled!
