The Story of Just Between Us (JBU)

Just Between Us magazine and ministry celebrates over 30 years of equipping and encouraging women for a life of faith. Founded in 1990 by international speaker and author Jill Briscoe, Just Between Us has served as a lifeline for women in the U.S. and overseas.

What began as a humble newsletter for pastors’ wives has since become a full-color quarterly publication, available worldwide for any Christian woman desiring to deepen her faith and service.

Just Between Us got its start in the form of a digest-sized magazine called Sunday to Sunday, published by Christianity Today, Inc. In 1990, the magazine was bought by Preaching magazine in Florida, and it took on the shape of a newsletter edited by Briscoe. In 1994, Briscoe took over the publication, bringing it to Milwaukee, Wis., where it has been published ever since. At that time, it evolved again into a magazine format with the new name of Just Between Us. In that year, average orders were 52 per month—today, they have grown to over 350.

Just Between Us is run by a team of two full-time and four part-time staff, and over 50 volunteers. Their combined efforts make the ministry possible. Volunteers range in age from their 30s to 70s, all giving of their time and talents to handle everything from subscriptions and marketing to web development and management. “Support is so important when you are working toward a goal, a vision,” said Briscoe. “Not only do you have different gifts that can fill needs—this person knows technology, this person handles mailings, this person provides counsel—but you have the support of each other. You are all working toward a common goal; you are united.”

In the beginning, publishing experts told Briscoe that running a magazine would never work this way, because publishing is too difficult. But Briscoe had a dream for a tool to encourage women serving around the world who were feeling discouraged, isolated, and under-resourced. She moved ahead anyway and against all odds, Just Between Us makes its way around the world every quarter to become the lifeline that Briscoe envisioned it so long ago.

From humble beginnings, Just Between Us has become an internationally recognized magazine with over 10,000 subscribers in all 50 states and over 65 countries. An additional 1.9 million women are reached worldwide through the web and social media. Thousands of women can read articles translated into Japanese, Portuguese, Vietnamese, and many other languages. Just Between Us has partnerships with women all over the world due to Briscoe’s extensive travels.

“Seeing women grow in their faith has been wonderful,” said Briscoe, reflecting on Just Between Us’s history. “I’ve had people tell me that having , receiving it in the mail, is like having a friend come through the door…it’s a blessing. It’s very humbling. It’s amazing what God has done with our little publication.”

In celebration of their 30th anniversary, the Just Between Us team has redesigned the magazine, adding new columns, columnists, and features to continue encouraging and equipping women for a life of faith.

“My delight over these 30 years is the huge practical help and encouragement JBU has been in the lives of women who know Jesus from many nations,” said Briscoe about the milestone. “We thank the Lord for biblical truth applied to our lives lived with Him, especially now, ‘For such a time as this.’” Est. 4:14.

Just Between Us Wins Awards! For the last 30 years, Just Between Us has been part of the Evangelical Press Association, the world's leading professional organization of Christian print and digital publications. For this year’s EPA awards there were over 1,800 entries. JBU received two first-place awards. In the Awards of Excellence, JBU was given the top award in Most Improved (Print). And in the Higher Goals Awards, JBU received three awards:
